In the mid-1990s, Russia emerged from communism. The country experienced a period of freedom unlike anything it had ever known, but at the same time descended into economic chaos orchestrated by unscrupulous oligarchs. In Normandy, François, a promising young politician, following a twist of fate, decides to leave everything behind to join an inexperienced humanitarian organisation. He throws his energy and his ideals into a mission in Chechnya, a small republic in the North Caucasus, which Moscow’s troops have just invaded. In the midst of the conflict, François and his colleagues try to remain true to their commitments, which will lead them to the brink of disaster.
