Alassane is fourteen when he leaves his village in Burkina Faso, a few years after the uprising that toppled Blaise Compaoré. His journey takes him from Bobo Dioulasso to Madagascar and from Mayotte to Paris, where chance brings him face to face with Ludmilla, a Ukrainian refugee haunted by the death of her parents. Between two solitudes, a fragile, discreet and tenacious love blossoms. But Malgré nous (In spite of ourselves) is not merely a love story. It is an ensemble novel, driven by eleven portraits, eleven destinies that intersect with Alassane’s and bring contemporary migration to life: people-smugglers, community activists, lawyers, employers and imperfect protectors. So many faces that speak to the brutality of exile, but also to its unexpected acts of solidarity.
