Sauver l’information de l’emprise des milliardaires [Saving information from
the clutches of the billionaires]
Olivier Legrain, avec Vincent Edin Éditions Payot, 2025 (published in French)

Editor’s note

In France, a handful of billionaires have recently taken over virtually every information source: the media, publishing houses, journalism schools, etc. As providing information is expensive and only marginally profitable, it isn’t economically attractive. There is an urgent need to combat this monopoly, which is dangerous for democracy.

As a teenager, Olivier Legrain was seduced by communist ideas, before going on to become the boss of some very large companies and making a fortune. The businessman-turned-millionaire is now a therapist, and is financing the future Maison des Médias Libres, due to open in Paris at the end of 2026.
